Elephants live in nearly any habitat that has enough food and water. They are found from lush rain forests to semi deserts. Throughout Africa and in many Asian countries these large creatures were common once. They inhabited even the Northern regions of Africa as late as Roman times. The main threats to these species are the spread of the desert and uncontrolled hunting. Elephants - Pictures - Behavior
Elephants live in small family groups, which consists of the dominative female (matriarch) and three or four generations of her offspring. Adult males are often solitary; they often visit the female family groups searching for females in estrus. Neighboring family groups never fight for territory, instead they greet each other affectionately when they meet at watering places.
Adult females stay in the group for many years, if they don't want to form their own family. Males mature at the age of 12-15 years and are expelled from the family. Males are not allowed to mate until they are 20 years and up. An annual period of aroused sexual activity in males is called musth. It lasts from a week to three months. During this time, males produce secretions from temporal glands, mark the trail with strong-smelling urine and make mating calls. Females are attracted to such males rather than males not in musth.
The most developed sense in Elephants is smell, but they communicate with sounds. Each individual has its typical growl, which distinguishes it by other members of the group. Elephants make mostly low-frequency calls, which are too low for humans to hear; they are able to communicate at distances of 5-6 miles.
